This one star review has more to do with the update than the QRI-6 itself. In the fifth edition they included a CD with all the PDF files where you could print out the student reading lists, student passages, examiner inventory sheets, etc. to use to assess the reader. Now, they have switched to an online version where you can access the eText version of the book. However, if you want to print out any of these things now from the eText, a huge copyright banner appears across the entire page making it illegible in parts and useless to put in front of students. I even went to customer support (twice) and the best they could do for me was an email telling me to get in touch with my local Pearson sales representative (who has yet to get back to me). It's ridiculous that this reading assessment tool is in essence useless without the necessary PDFs that don't have a copyright banner across them. I wish I could buy the 5th edition again with the CD that I could use. As it stands now, I will have to spend hours and hours in front of a copier to make copies off the hardcopy of the book, or return it and find something else. What a awful oversight on behalf of Pearson.
This is a wonderful resource for a reading specialist or reading teacher who need to analyze the reading behaviors of students. The new edition comes with 8 years of access to the etext where you can print the needed pages through a pdf link (without the copyright notice on the center on the page). You simply need to click the printer icon for a link to the full pdf file with all the easily printable pages. I am just beginning to use this resource with elementary students that I work with, but so far it has worked out well as the directions are very clear and precise. In addition to determining a child's three different reading levels, there is another section for grades 4 and up where teachers can analyze how students make inferences in text. As a professional reading educator, I would recommend this resource to other reading professionals or teachers who wish to assess students' reading levels.
The QRI itself is great but I am very unhappy that my access code included in the back of the book in a cardboard insert titled: STOP! DON'T THROW ME AWAY! This is your Pearson eText access code card. Inside just as promised was an access code. After trying three times unsuccessfully to use it, I called the help number. After a long conversation of me giving numbers over and over and the support person trying to enter my access code, I was told that I have a "student access code" and I should have received an "educator code." She said just contact your seller and explain the mistake, and get an educator code. ?????? I can only surmise that by "student" she means higher ed student in a course that uses the QRI. I did not see any mention of this when purchasing. Should I have purchased the text differently?
If you're anything like me, you are buying this for a grad course. I didn't know what this book was used for until AFTER purchasing the digital version. The purpose of this book is to provide reading tests to your students that you must be able to photo copy to administer, but the kindle app offers no print app. I just had to call Amazon to get a refund so I could order the print version.
I have used both the QRI-4 and the QRI-5 as an assessment tool for elementary school children. It is a helpful tool for determining a student's reading level and comprehension level. It is not a short, quick assessment (like a reading fluency), but the information gotten from the results are well worth the time invested. It is also possible to "streamline" the process by omitting certain sections of the assessment to best fit your student's needs.The assessment includes graded word lists, leveled reading passages in both narrative and expository texts, and comprehension questions, explicit and implicit. I have found that QRI gives pretty accurate results. Also, the testing situation can be altered to fit each student - oral reading, silent reading, listening, or a combination of the above.Also included are handy assessment record sheets. The directions for administration are clear, and implications for results are given. Of great use is the included CD (DVD for QRI-5). It makes for convenient copying the student and teacher pages. I have not yet viewed the enclosed video, but the book claims that it is helpful to those learning how to use the assessment.Overall, I have found this book to be a great assessment tool.
I bought this book years ago for a college undergrad course and many years later, I still use this book to assess my student's reading ability. I love that the book is spiral bound which makes it very easy to copy the assessments from it. This book contains leveled reading passages so you can do running records as your students read the passages and tons of word lists and assessments that you can use to informally evaluate readers in your classroom. In the beginning of every school year, I use these assessments to help me place students in the appropriate leveled reading groups. Highly recommended for any classroom/reading teacher!
Check out the fine print. E-edition includes no resources. If you're using for a class you'll have to type. Access only by device, even Kindle Cloud for laptop does not work (if it did I could read a page at a time, as it is I have to tip the kindle sideways and zoom in and read a paragraph at a time. The publisher seems bent on making the e-edition useless for studies unless you need only to read a paragraph at a time.
This text comes highly recommended for conducting informal assessments [IRI] on students slated for interventions. This a stand alone text that provides all that I need to diagnose students' in K-12 reading problems.
