This series featuring Pliny the Younger got off to a good start, but it has been deteriorating.I preordered the paperback version of this the 7th Case, and received it in September 2018. I got 1/4th of the way through it and discovered about 30 blank pages. I shrugged it off and read the rest anyway.The problem is that there is an excessive amount of dallying around with all the women in Pliny's life: mother, mother in law, wife, slave mistress, and others. They all are meddling and turning Pliny into a henpecked guy. Not the sort of thing that appeals to male readers. It got rather wearisome, and I think it will get worse in future books in the series. There also was an excessive amount of attention to non-Roman culture and religion too, which I also found tiresome. I am abandoning this series.
Well there is plenty of action and drama in this latest offering and I read it with the same attention as the other books in the series. It has enough flavor for me to read the other books by Bell, Death by Armoire will be my next. Well done Mr. Bell!
If you like historical mysteries, then this will do the trick. I like the whole Pliny the Younger series, and I hope the author will write more of them. You get plenty of historical facts of this period and you get a good story. I'm interested in the ancient Roman period with all the politics of its day. I would recommend this book!
