Fantastic book. Has been a great help to me in adjusting to my son's suicide. It gave me permission to cry, it helped me see it wasn't me that did something wrong or missed something. So could stop blaming myself and feeling guilty.
One of the best, if not the best, books I've read about suicide and being a suicide survivor and I've read many since my son, Mark, died by suicide 6 years ago. The last chapter is so good! I, too, have had many signs from Mark and they are the things that keep me sane and knowing that I will get to hug him and be with him again when I cross over. Thank you for writing this book!
I got this book after I lost my brother. It helped with some of the question of the way somebody thinks and their actions leading up to the tragic day. I understood my brother had bad depression, but you really don't know how bad somebody suffers inside. I also gave it to my mother to read and it helped her also. I have just sent it to my niece and nephew too. You will never get over such a loss. I will never stop missing my brother/my best friend, but it helps to try and understand a person's actions. The book explains the feelings and grieving you may feel but it does not address how to deal with them. That is best addressed in therapy. This book is good for the early weeks of the suicide. Some of the examples given of the persons actions helped me to understand my brothers behavior the last two weeks. A person planning suicide finally feels in control because they have made a plan and sometimes will seem much happier. That can be confusing to those of left behind wondering why... "he seemed so happy the last few days." I am now reading The Forgotten Mourners: Sibling Survivors of Suicide.
This book is short and a quick read, which is great. It also does not go into great detail on violent deaths. I think that can be powerful in certain instances, but I appreciated that this book did not do that. The description of "A Jar of Stones" as how suicidal people feel was incredible. That was one of the best descriptions I've read on helping me to understand what my brother was going through before ending his life. Highly recommend this book to anybody suffering the loss of a loved one to suicide.
Absolutely, one of he best books on dealing with suicide. It really helped my husband & I after our son died by suicide. Well written and the explanations are very comforting. We really loved the stories of gifts are loved ones leave us. After reading the one about a brother leaving his sister pennies, our son started leaving us pennies in the most unusual places. We now understand why he did it and don’t blame ourselves. Thank you!
I lost my brother to suicide just two weeks and one day ago. This book arrived today and I finished reading it within just a few hours! Reading this book helped me to understand my brother's suicidal mind just a bit better which helps me to understand why he chose to leave us in such a horrendous way. I can also understand his behaviors a little more now. Knowing this information before my brother died might have changed his outcome, but nonetheless, this book is helping me process his death a little better. I reccomend this book to anyone who lost a loved one, whether you just lost them or it has been some time. I also recommend this book to ANYONE who knows their loved one has attempted suicide before... knowing some vital information could save your loved one from death by suicide.I liked: easy read, too the pointDisliked: first chapter that included a lot of now out-of-date information, and I was left with wanting to know more about why suicidal people do or do not do certain things (e.g., when they dont leave a note, why they might not say goodbye). Still, I definitely recommend it!
I can not explain what this book did for me. I lost my husband of 15 years (and three kids) to suicide. This book gave me hope and clarity; both of which are priceless. In a work where we don't discuss mental health, this book gives a laments example to understand the "sick" mind. Thank you
Ms Cobain and Ms Larch accurately grasp the impact of suicide and the complexity of this grief. My husband and I read this book and found it very helpful. There is a good balance of scientific information regarding suicide and personal, emotional experiences. We would recommend it to any family who has experienced this life changing, most painful event; especially those with recent losses.
