My Brother Sam is Dead was required school reading for my eleven year old son and after also reading it myself, I would say the target age is probably in the 10-13 range. The story is told from the viewpoint of Tim, an early teen boy living in Massachusetts during the Revolutionary period and deals with Tim's conflict of whether to support the views of his America-siding late teen brother Sam or his British-sympathizing father. The book is a fairly quick read that is historically accurate and manages to work in some real Revolutionary figures into the story. Both my son and I enjoyed it and discussed the book after reading.

This well written story is a page turner for both kids and parents. It lays out situations to explore and discuss with your kids. Would recommend it to anyone interested in American history.

Having now just re-read this book 25 years latter I can see how this book can still effect young minds about the revolutionary war era. Although historical fiction it still rings true in the feeling of what life was like back then.

Very good book for a young teen to read.

Purchased for my daughter for her 8th great English/Social Studies summer project. She enjoyed the book and will be studying it further as the school year progresses.

Seems ok great for my sons book report

Somewhat Helpful

This book is at the reading level of about...4th or 5th grade. It doesn't have any hard vocabulary, but at least things do happen. It is about a boy named Tim and his brother named Sam. The family is torn apart by the American Revolution and their father was kidnapped by these cow-boys. The story was not exactly extremely exciting, but it doesn't really bore you to death either. So it deserved a low 4, or a strong 3 if you'd like to think of it that way.
