My parents and Grandfather designed most of the rhinestone jewelry shown in the book, including my Grandfather's, Henry Schreiner, necklace on the cover jacket. It first appeared on the cover of "Life" magazine on Sept. 8, 1952. Since they had a great working relationship with Norell, mom, at 90 years young, enjoyed the book. Mom wore a Norell when she graduated high school, given to my grandfather for her to wear, by Norell himself. My dad always said Norell was always a gentleman, and loved working with him. The book is a wonderful tribute to Norell, and is very well done. Some of the background information was very interesting to her since they only dealt with him on a business level.
I have approximately 1000 books on fashion. I must say this extraordinary first monograph on one of the most important fashion designers, Norman Norell, by the talented designer/author, Jeffrey Banks, now tops my list. Each page MUST be devoured slowly, each iconic photograph and each brilliant Michael Vollbracht drawing only add to the beauty of the book. I had the great pleasure of working with Mr. Norell and his exquisite 4 models, Claudia, Claire, Denise and Yvonne (along with four local, Chicago, look alike models) on several fashion shows. The book took m back to the days when everyone dressed magnificently and everyone (me included) coveted a Norell specially a sequin mermaid gown. His talent, his creativity, his humble personality are all emphasized in NORELL. I am beyond thrilled that two of my favorite world class designers have now been immortalized in their long over due books...first, a couple of years ago, Bonnie Cashin:Chic Is Where You Find It by Stephanie Lake and now Norell: Master Of American Fashion, both iconic designers who led the emergence of what we now know as American Fashion. Bravo Jeffrey Banks. I encourage all interested in design, beauty and the history of fashion to hit the buy button immediately!!
I am 69 years old and remembered the name "Norell" from my high school days. Always wondered what happened to this designer. Now I know. Norell did outstanding, classic designs and his attention to details was superb. The book not only shows excellent photos of his designs but also how he did inside seams, zippers, etc. Brings back memories of my mother's friend who sewed Norell style clothing on her Singer machine. Beautiful, colorful, creative clothing describes Norman Norell. By the way, the book arrived in pristine condition!
I give this book a 5. It is well written, researched and the Fashion photographs make the clothing step off the pages onto the runway of your mind. I attended The Fashion Institute of Technology NORMAN NORELL exhibit and the lecture. Purchasing this book was the icing on the cake.

I wrote the book I most wanted to read about NORMAN NORELL, who was America's preeminent designer for six decades. It is lavishly illustrated with his sketches and photographs of his stunning creations by the likes of Avedon, Penn, Kenneth Paul Block and dozens of others. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it .
