This book is awesome! Lots of "how to" instructions and pictures to help you along. I also have the 1st edition in print. I highly recommend both for any avid crocheter.
This is a wonderful resource tool for everyone from the beginner to the advanced crocheter. I have many of Ms. Edie Eckman's crochet books and find that, without exception, they are extremely well-written and the designs are top notch.I also own the first edition of this title. That book is about ten years old and I have used it all the time. I was provided a temporary digital advance reader copy of the new edition (by the publisher via Netgalley). Once I had gone through it, I knew that I would (and did) pre-order the hard copy to have on hand at all times. There was enough update to the book - new yarns and techniques - that getting the second edition made complete sense.I honestly have not had a crochet question come up which is not addressed in this answer book. The illustrations are not great but the information is definitely sufficient to work through my issues. This is not a pattern book; it is a resource book to find answers to issues you never even knew that you had. While reading through it, I had many "Aha!" moments when I realized that I had been doing something in a less than optimal way.Whether for yourself or as a gift for someone you know who crochets, this book is a perfect additional to the crocheters bookcase. Though that is a misstatement - it will never sit in my bookcase, it will stay in my bag with my latest project so that it is never more than an arm's reach away from me. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
I bought this book based on wonderful reviews. But when I first unpackaged it, I was shocked at the size of the book. It’s tiny! I was worried that, despite its bulk, the font inside would be unreadable.I had nothing to fear. The text inside is not huge, but it’s not so small that you need a magnifying glass to read it. The compact size of the book is perfect for fitting into a crochet bag or basket, keeping all this information at your fingertips, should you need to consult it during a project.This isn’t the sort of book that one typically reads cover-to-cover, and I have not read much from it. But I have thumbed through it, and I must say that I am quite impressed with the information it contains. I am no crochet pro, but if there are questions that this book doesn’t cover, I sure can’t figure out what those are!This book will come in quite handy to me, and to my 12 daughter, who I recently taught to crochet.I highly recommend this purchase.
The reason I purchased this book (as well as A to Z of Crochet, The Ultimate Guide for the Beginner to Advanced Crocheter) was to renew my basic knowledge of this hobby. I had not crocheted in decades, & had forgotten pattern shorthand terms, certain stitches, & techniques. After reading reviews of several comprehensive books, these seemed to be the best choices based on price, ratings/reviews, & skill level [also the "look inside" Amazon peeks]. Both are valuable, but in different ways. The size of The Crochet Answer Book is very handy to tuck inside my crochet tote & doesn't take up much room on my lap; but it is slightly awkward to keep open to a specific page. The glued section at the Appendix has cracked open after just a few weeks. This book has clearly drawn illustrations (versus photographs in the other text) which are labeled in right & left handed options; the font is clear & easy to read, despite my nearsightedness! One of the reviewers commented about the Q & A format which makes it difficult to quickly find an answer. My take is that although this is a fat fact-filled tool, a 2nd reference is good to supplement or find what you are seeking. The author admits not "every problem/question" is tackled but she adds plenty of supplemental information & references including online sites. Overall, a purchase good for beginners & others wanting to advance their craft.
I love this book- I owned "The Quilting/Sewing Answer Book" and saw the original crochet answer book a while ago but didn't have the money for it at the time, when i went to look to buy that one, I realized there was a 2nd edition and I was so excited! I think what I love most about this book is that it has pictures for LEFTIES and Righties! As a left handed crocheter I get frustrated a lot with tutorials online showing how things are done because they are mainly shown without a Lefty point of view. Understandable since we are a rarity but that rarity sure does make learning a new hobby like this a little more difficult!
The books content is pretty good. It’s very thorough and has diagrams to show different stitches. It’s very helpful for someone like me, who is fairly good at teaching them self, but needs a clear set of instructions to follow.The book I bought was listed as paperback though, and I received a hardcover. I specifically wanted paperback so that I wouldn’t have to hold the book or keep putting my work down to read. The hardcover completely prevents the book from staying open, and the book itself is only about 6 inches tall and 4 inches wide with a 1 inch binding. This makes it very difficult to read while working, so it’s not formatted in the most convenient way. If it were paperback or bound with construction that allowed it to stay open, this would be 5 stars.
