Some may find it unbelievable that a 20-year-old Oregon woman could be enslaved by a sexual sadist for seven years--that even after being able to move freely during the day, she would allow him to lock her into a wooden box every night. Perhaps it's a minor failing of this book that the authors do not elaborate on the psychology that made her such a "perfect victim." In other respects, though, the story is well told, with an impressive accumulation of details: the woman's capture, the tortures she endured, the brainwashing techniques, the fiendish contraptions her captor constructed, the slave contract he made her sign, and the increasingly strained relations within the peculiar family that included master, slave, wife, and child, all inside a single-wide trailer. As well-known attorney and author Vincent Bugliosi writes, "A gripping and disturbing story of the secret life of apparently normal people. At once, horrific and engrossing."

i am going to give this book to some young, adult, female relatives to read as i want them to understand how it isn't safe to get into a car with anyone just because there is a woman or even a child in the car.this infamous case involved a man who talked his wife into helping him to kidnap a hitchhiker. i think that his wife got off easy legally. she should have been prosecuted and put in prison, too. she cooperated mainly because she wanted this man so much, which was a narcissistic motive. so was the jealousy that caused her to help the victim escape.they were driving around with their baby when they saw the victim hitchhiking and offered her a ride. he had prepared everything for such an opportunity. the victim didn't imagine that he would be dangerous with his wife and baby in the car.it was a challenging case to prosecute due to the brainwashing involved, which was a new concept at that time for the public. in the patty hearst case, the jury had failed to understand or believe "stockholm syndrome," and this case involved something similar.
Chilling read. I just hope the victims can find some sort of normalcy and move on with their lives. It’s a sick world out there. I’m going to watch the movie now. I don’t know why this book grabbed me the way it did, but i couldn’t put it down. I will now think about Colleen and the horror she went through. I’m just glad she made it out alive and this jerk is behind bars. I also wonder if he will ever get tried for the “claimed†first abdication and murder?
This book is based on a true story. It is educational and entertaining. I would recommend it for classes on criminology or in the study of victims. It was amazing to see what a hold the victims kidnapper had on the victim. There were lots of twist s and turns as well. A great read, but be prepared for darkness. This is not a fairy tale.
This book is one you can't put down. I read it in just a few days. The story is so amazing. I'm glad I ordered this book and I would recommend it to anyone interested in a true story of human survival.
"Perfect Victim" tells the bizarre story of a young woman kidnapped while hitchhiking from Oregon to her home in California in 1977. Colleen Stan is sadistically kept prisoner for most of 7 years. She is forced to spend many nights in a small box; a "dungeon" would be too generous a description. She is raped, tortured and just plain denigrated by her captors, Cameron and Jan Hooker. In the process she becomes their virtual slave. Apparently "brainwashed", she ignores opportunities to escape. This is the most difficult part of the plot for the reader to fathom. Why didn't Colleen run? Was she truly brainwashed? This reviewer believes she was, but others will certainly disagree. Suddenly! Colleen is a free woman and the wheels of justice begin to spin. The second half of "PV" is concerned with the arrest and trial of the Hookers. In a special -and positive- twist, a co-author, Christine McGuire, is the prosecutor! As an author, she may favor her position. She takes an obvious shot or two at the defense counsel, but who can blame her, given the low life of a defendant? I firmly believe reviewers should not divulge endings (or how Colleen became "free"), so I will end quickly. "PV" is definitely recommended to true crime devotees. The only drawbacks are the disturbing nature of the plot and the amount of space devoted to the trial. It could have been edited down, but this is a minor detail. Who can blame author McGuire for writing about prosecutor McGuire? It's unclear if "PV" is readily available. My advice is to persist in finding a copy.
I missed the movie on TV so bought the book. The main character was hitchhiking to my old home town and so I was curious to read it. Very explicit sexual content.
What a story. and its true. I was gnashing my teeth reading this , and how 2 people could just USE another human, like a possession! I still shudder--thinking of how this man thought, and the things he did, and finally , the dramatic court scenes...and the lawyers who didn't sleep till this was over. I could NOT put this down. Makes you less naive...after you've read it.
One of the most compelling true crime books I've read. Started out with a bang and continued for the rest of the book. Well written and constructed so there's never a dull moment.
