Theresa Robbins Dudeck is Keith Johnstone's Literary Executor and Co-Director of the Global Improvisation Initiative (GII). She is an improvisation and applied improvisation practitioner and scholar working in both academic and professional settings, and she is considered one of the foremost teachers of Keith Johnstone's Impro System. Dudeck is the author of Keith Johnstone: A Critical Biography (Bloomsbury 2013). She received her Ph.D. in Theatre from the University of Oregon.Caitlin McClure has been applying improv to projects inside and outside of the theatre for most of her life. Based in New York City, she coaches, designs and facilitates experiential learning leadership development programs, worldwide. McClure received her M.A. in Adult Learning and Leadership at Columbia University.

Anyone who works with or addresses groups of people in just about any setting will benefit from reading this book and applying the techniques advocated. I have nodded off many times while listening to a read or memorized presentation regardless of its significance to my life. Even when information is written for a specific setting—schoolroom, work group, boardroom, convention hall, etc.—nothing is as effective as the speaker who responds to the listeners’ vibes. Most people need to be entertained at least a little to absorb information. If a facilitator or presenter takes a risk and flounders a little, no matter; freshness and spontaneity trump perfection. But Applied Improvisation is more than the symbiotic relationship between a speaker and an audience: it is a method for enhancing communication, for drawing out creativity, for solving problems, for overcoming self-consciousness, for becoming more aware of the amazing world around us and the list goes on. It’s a big splash of humanity in this increasingly robotic world of technology.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to be inspired by the potential applications of Improvisation.It is full of innovative and inspiring case studies that not only frame the work in a clear way, but also back up the work with research, critical analysis, and expansive examples. This is a well written book with so many interesting stories and strategies to use!! I've been teaching special education at the elementary level for 22 years. I love when I find a book that can give me ideas that I can use in my classroom!. This is one of those kinds of books! What makes it a great book is it applies to Everyone! This is a fascinating book and very well-written. It would be extremely helpful to trainers and facilitators who are working with executive teams and other employees, forprofit and nonprofit alike, but the title may not immediately catch their attention. I have had the privilege of working with one of the contributors, Teresa Norton, for years. Prior to that it never dawned on me to use "theater techniques" in my trainings. I did use role play and related exercises but now I wish I had read this book years ago. I am definitely not an actor but in a way, anyone who presents or teaches is acting; however, they are probably not doing so in a deliberate or informed way. This book will spark ideas big and small about ways to make trainings come alive and I highly recommend it.
